Mainstream Housing Vouchers
Mainstream Housing Vouchers, Information Bulletin, # 103, 2/06 Throughout the years, Congress has funded more than 63,000 Mainstream Housing Vouchers so that persons with disabilities could receive a subsidy to pay rent and reside in the private housing market. Your Public Housing Authorities are supposed to issue Mainstream Housing Vouchers only to persons who have a disability. When the Vouchers are returned by a tenant, your Public Housing Authority is supposed to reissue them, once again, only to persons with a disability. Mainstream Housing Vouchers, like other housing vouchers, are intended to make "affordable" a large segment of the private housing market. All vouchers pay a federal housing subsidy that supplements the rent paid by the person with a disability. In a recent response to a Freedom of Information Act Request, HUD provided data that indicated a large percentage of the Mainstream Housing Vouchers were not being used by persons with a disability. In previous Information Bulletins, we provided by State (not by local Public Housing Authority) the total numbers of Mainstream Vouchers. See www.stevegoldada.com, click on housing and go to 11/21/03; 10/22/02; and 11/14/01. What Disability Advocates Could Do: 1. Find out how many Mainstream Housing Vouchers your local Public Housing Authority has been awarded by asking your Public Housing Authority for information to show if a unit is leased with a Mainstream Vouchers by persons with a disability. 2. Find out your Public Housing Authority tracks Mainstream Vouchers to make sure they are being used by persons with a disability. 3. Given the desperate need for persons with disabilities for housing subsidies, find out why would there be even one Mainstream Voucher not being used by a person with a disability?
